Now that your children are enjoying their summer break, that means a lot of time outside!  This includes going to the lake, playing at the park with their friends, and chasing their dogs around the neighborhood.  Whatever they choose to do outside, we can all agree on one thing: the heat is exhausting.  That’s why children usually choose popsicles, ice cream, and snow cones to cool themselves down.  Although these treats can be eaten every once in a while, pediatric dentists in Fair Lawn say that too many sweets can cause cavities.  That’s why we recommend making your own healthy popsicles at home; this is what you need to know.

 

What ingredients should I use to make healthy popsicles?

There are many different routes that you can take, but remember that your goal is to make everything natural, meaning no added sugar.  You can do this by using fresh or frozen fruit, greek or natural yogurt for the base, and no artificial flavors.

 

How do I make them?

All you need in order to make these are freezer pop molds and popsicle sticks.  You can buy these at the store, or you may have items at home that can help you.  For instance, instead of popsicle sticks, you can use plastic spoons.  Instead of popsicle molds, try using small yogurt containers, plastic cups, or even muffin tins.  After you blend or mix your ingredients, you should freeze them for 3 to 6 hours.

 

How long can I keep them frozen?

Although they probably won’t last this long without being eaten, they can last around 6 months in your freezer.  This means you can make a large batch and eat them all summer.

 

Can you give us an example of a recipe?

To make a mango popsicle, all you need are sweet mango chunks, lime juice, water or coconut milk, and honey.  All you have to do is blend the ingredients together and put them in the mold!  This is just an example of a recipe, but don’t be afraid to get creative.  You can add coconut shavings, mango chunks, watermelon, or whatever else your little ones enjoy.
