Is Mouthwash Necessary for Kids?

Whether children should use mouthwash or not is a common question among parents. And, although there are different viewpoints, the truth is that it depends on different aspects such as the child’s age and their overall oral health. In general, children’s mouthwashes are recommended mainly for those patients that have a high risk of suffering from dental cavities, gingivitis or periodontal disease.

Among high-risk patients, children undergoing an orthodontic treatment are also included since there are areas in their mouth that are more prone to plaque and are more difficult to clean. Also, children suffering from other disorders or diseases are also considered high-risk patients since they may be taking medications that reduce the salivary flow or cause eating disorders. Mouthwash, therefore, has a fundamental role in any program that aims to prevent or diminish the negative effects that plaque can lead to in the mouth.

It is important to note, though, that children’s mouthwash is only useful as a complement of brushing and flossing. Controlling plaque with chemicals is beneficial but it does not replace brushing and flossing, which are more mechanical.

It is also paramount that a pediatric dentist advises you how much and how often your children must use mouthwash for a successful preventive program. There is not a golden rule and, according to each patient’s specific situation, the instructions may vary.

The use of mouthwash for your kids is recommended when they are able to rinse it without swallowing it. This normally happens at the age of 6, when children have developed their neuromuscular junction enough so that they control when to swallow and when not.  For children that have a high risk of suffering from dental cavities, but are under 6 and are not able to control not swallowing the mouthwash, there are other tools which parents can use to apply the mouthwash in different ways.
