3 Dental Hygiene New Year’s Resolutions For You And Your Child

Christmas has passed and the New Year is upon us. That means now is the perfect time to start pondering some new year’s resolutions. The key to making a resolution that you stick to is choosing something that’s attainable. If you make your goals too extreme then you’ll never keep it up. The same applies to your child. Here are a few key dental hygiene relates resolutions that you and your child can get behind for the new year. From Pediatric Dental Associates, your most reliable Bergen County NJ Pediatric Dentistry Company, we hope these resolutions find you well.

Resolution #1: Keep Up With Your Dentist Appointments!

Those appointments are more important than you think. Daily upkeep is important. Brushing, rinsing, and flossing twice a day remains important from the early years all the way into adulthood. However, what’s even more important than the daily maintenance is your biannual cleaning. They’re doing a lot more in those 30 minutes than you think, and without your help, you’re opening yourself up for a world of cavities and discomfort. Whatever bad habits you may have had with regards to setting up and making those appointments you can leave behind you. Because now you have an example to set. In order to make sure your child develops the right habits for the future, you have to assume those habits also.

Resolution #2: Keep Up The Daily Maintenance

As we’d just established, those dentist appointments are crucial. But as we’d also mentioned, you have to keep it up on the daily as well. We’re talking at least twice a day, brushing for a solid 3 minutes, focusing mostly on the molars. Those teeth get the least attention from brushers usually, yet they also get the most exposure to sugary foods. Then once finished, make sure to rinse.

Bear in mind, that for your kid, you should be conscious of age. If your child is too young, he or she may not be ready to use mouthwash, as it should not be swallowed. Also, depending on how many teeth your child has should determine whether he or she is ready for flossing.

Resolution #3: LESS SUGAR!

Well, this should come as no surprise. But it’s also the most important one of the three! Sugar is everywhere. It’s also without question the direct source that causes cavities. It’s a tall task to ask of a child to lower his or her sugar intake. That’s why it’s on you to keep tabs on your child’s diet. In case you’d noticed him or her developing a bit of a bad habit with the sweets, January 1st is just around the corner. Seize the moment to make a change. Lay some ground rules if you have to. Years later, your kid will thank you for it.
