3 Reasons Your Child Won’t Brush Their Teeth

best kids dentistry in Glen Rock

Your child should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day; if they don’t, it could cause cavities, or worse health issues.  The problem is that, sometimes, children don’t understand why it’s so important that they maintain their oral hygiene.  They probably don’t understand that bad oral hygiene can actually be linked to diabetes, heart disease, or even cancer.  It’s okay if they don’t fully understand that yet, but regardless, they need to keep up with their oral hygiene routine.  As a parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure that they’re doing so.  That being said, you may feel a little frustrated if your child never wants to brush their teeth.  Here are some of the common reasons that they may not want to.  (Related topics: best children’s dentist Bergen County, best kids dentist Bergen County)

It’s Uncomfortable

Some kids refuse to brush their teeth because of how it feels.  We probably can’t relate, as we brush our teeth every day without any problems.  Kids, though, have sensitive teeth.  Not to mention that when they’re young, they’re growing in teeth, losing them, and growing them again.  This process can cause your child to feel pain when they brush their teeth.  If this is the case, you should try changing their toothbrush to a “soft” toothbrush for children.

They Don’t Like the Taste

The answer to this problem could be as simple as changing their toothpaste.  All you have to do is ask them if they like the flavor of their toothpaste.  If they don’t, let them pick out the next flavor; this will motivate them to brush their teeth.

Boredom

When children are young, they have a hard time standing still for too long.  Although it’s only 2 minutes, they may get bored and skip it or brush their teeth really fast to get it over with.
